KU Figtree Preschool has celebrated the 125th anniversary of KU Children’s Services (KU).

The preschool recognised this special milestone by supporting the Green Connect care package project, as it is consistent with the preschool’s focus on helping others and their no-waste philosophy that promotes sustainability.

“We have known about the wonderful work of Green Connect for years. The Green Connect Farm engages with community, growing organic and free-range foods. One of their aims is to teach and inspire people to reduce waste and grow fair food for themselves. When we heard about the care packages that Green Connect have been organising for families doing it tough during the lockdown, we knew that our preschool community would love to help. KU Figtree Preschool has always been focused on supporting children and families and the wider community,” said KU Figtree Directors, Elena Santarelli and Cheryl Collinson-Smith.

The theme of the 125 years celebration was ‘making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education’.

“We have had a shared history in the local community for the last 50 years since the service opened in 1971 and understand that the well-being of children and families is strengthened by building genuine connections and developing feelings of belonging to the community. Since our celebrations have been impacted by the pandemic, we thought it would be fitting to reach out to the community,” said Elena.

“KU Figtree has been participating in a Becoming Eco Smart Together project since 2020. Because of the pandemic, our community-based Garden Project, a street garden within the grounds of KU Figtree Preschool has been delayed. We are now hoping to begin work on the garden in late 2021. For this reason, we chose to assist an organisation that aligns with our values for educating for sustainability”.
