Alfred Child Care Centre has celebrated the 125th anniversary of KU Children’s Services (KU).

The centre recognised this special milestone by donating over 125 items of clothing and planting 125 seeds and seedlings into their garden.

“Our families were invited to bring, take or swap any children’s clothing that they no longer had a use for, with the leftover clothing donated to the charity St Kilda Mums to further give life to the clothing. We planned to donate at least 125 items of clothing, but far surpassed this by donating 160 items of clothing to have another life,” said Alfred Child Care Centre Director, Yoon-Hee Cha.

“The centre is currently also planting 125 seeds and seedlings into our garden using seeds and seedlings brought in from the gardens of the families and staff. This is a long-term project starting from July to October and we believe this celebration experience will develop many new skills for the children,” said Yoon-Hee.

The theme of the 125 years celebration was ‘making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education’.

“These activities have contributed to the children broadening their understanding of the world in which we live and how to contribute through projects. They will be able to develop a better awareness of the impact of human activity on environments and on other people. By incorporating the activities into small, everyday routines, we were able to celebrate KU’s admirable milestone in a more meaningful way,” said Yoon-Hee.

Celebrating 125 years through collective efforts has encouraged a sense of community and togetherness within the centre. “Incorporating these values into the celebration was important to us and appreciated by our community,” said Yoon-Hee.
