KU Gwynneville Preschool has celebrated the 125th anniversary of KU Children’s Services (KU). The preschool recognised this special milestone by creating a spoon village.

“We were inspired by the 'Spoon Villages', so we asked present, past and future children to make 125 spoon people, creating a 'celebration' in our front yard", said KU Gwynneville Preschool Director, Sue Vlasoff.

The theme of the 125 years celebration was ‘making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education’.

“We are currently working towards creating a community space here that will benefit not only the children in our preschool but also the broader community. We have already established a book library and added a bench seat, as well as some raised garden beds ready for planting", said Sue.

"The children helped put together the garden beds, shoveled the dirt and then created their own spoon to add. We hope that the children will continue to enjoy our community garden long after their time at the centre, create some fond memories, and if they pass our preschool in their adult years they will see an established and thriving community garden and remember when they created their spoon and contributed to the garden project."

This fits with our centre philosophy and our commitment to extending knowledge around and promoting sustainable practices within our preschool environment and community. As the children take their spoon home as a keep sake at the end of the year, they are invited to replace it with a seedling, plant or leave some seeds for future planting."
