The Katoomba Winter Magic Festival recently invited schools and preschools in the Upper Blue Mountains region to get involved in a light artwork project that would celebrate the multiculturalism of the area while paying respect to the traditional owners.
KU Bilya Gulyangarri became involved in the community project with the preschool deciding to create an artwork that would reflect their environment with all the magic of their natural bush surroundings.
The staff and children discovered there were frequent visits from magpies in their environment, and with some advice from a local indigenous representative, this majestic bird was selected as the totem of KU Bilya Gulyangarri Preschool and was represented through a beautiful artwork.
The staff and children created the artwork together with the help of a parent volunteer who was also one of the organisers of the community event. It was a very proud moment for the preschool as their artwork was lit up in the local community alongside the artwork of other local schools and preschools.
