On Tuesday, 2 December, KU Crusader Preschool celebrated 80 years of delivering exceptional early childhood education and care for children and families in Marrickville.

Amongst attendees were Jo Haylen, Member for Parliament, Summer Hill; Rod Aanensen, Marrickville Heritage Society; and Richard Blair, Marrickville Heritage Society, who attended KU Crusader Preschool as a child in the 1940s. As well as Christine Legg, KU Children’s Services CEO; Megan Montgomery, KU Crusader Preschool Director; Deborah Loveday, KU Education and Quality Manager and Amy Kabos, KU Education and Support Manager also attended.

Guests enjoyed a range of activities to fundraise for the service, including face painting, t-shirt marking, a gelato stand and an artwork auction, followed by speeches from Jo Haylen, MP, Christine Legg, KU Children’s Services CEO and Megan Montgomery, KU Crusader Preschool Director.

“Today, we celebrate 80 years of partnering with families in Marrickville to deliver exceptional early childhood education and care for children and families. KU Crusader Preschool holds a special place in the community. I am delighted that Richard Blair from the Marrickville Heritage Society, is here today who attended KU Crusader as a child in the 1940s, as a testament to the intergenerational partnerships between this preschool and its community,” said Christine Legg.

The preschool’s history was documented in a historic display, curated by the Marrickville Heritage Society.

KU Crusader Preschool was established in 1945 by the Marrickville Council, funded by KU, and affiliated with Globe Kindergarten. At the time of opening it was managed by Miss Nancy Dougan, with 60 children in attendance.

Located in the heart of Marrickville next to leafy Jarvis Park, KU Crusader provides an engaging, spacious environment where children are supported to be their own unique selves.
