On Wednesday 10th December, Deputy Lord Mayor, Jess Miller visited KU Lance Children’s Centre for the service’s farewell event to celebrate the history and achievements of one of KU’s longest standing services.

Past and present families and staff attended the celebration to commemorate the remarkable impact KU Lance has had in the Millers Point community for over 100 years. Among the past families were Margaret Anderson-Lunt, who attended KU Lance as a child in the late 1950’s, and Don Gilhooly, who attended in 1963 with family and friends.

Guests heard personal anecdotes from Mr Gilhooly and Mel Tait, a present-day parent whose three children attend KU Lance. Followed by speeches from Deputy Lord Mayor, Jess Miller on behalf of Lord Mayor, Clover Moore; Christine Legg, KU Children’s Services CEO; and Ewa Kuras, present day KU Lance Director.

Each speaker reflected on KU Lance’s special and tight knit connection with the local community, and its long history of delivering high quality, not for profit education and care.

KU Lance was established as the Commonwealth Free Kindergarten in 1900 in Windmill Street, later moving to Munn Street in 1903 after the original building was burned down. It was relocated in 1909 and again in 1925 to High Street in Millers Point where it became a KU operated Kindergarten and served the community for over a century, tucked away under the leafy shade of trees, overlooking the water.
