More than 350 children and adults joined together to celebrate KU Avalon Preschool’s 60th anniversary on Sunday 13 November.

KU Avalon, formerly Avalon Playtime Kindergarten, spent its early years based at the Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Three years after opening its doors in 1951, the kindergarten moved to Avalon Parade, where it has remained.

“We’re proud to be the current teaching team at KU Avalon Preschool and Sunday’s event was a great opportunity to remember and recognise the 60 year history of the centre,” said Director, Sally Wilson.

Local Aboriginal elder Bob Waterer welcomed everyone to the celebration and the children sang some of their favourite songs. Pittwater Mayor, Harvey Rose, thanked KU Avalon Preschool for its remarkable contribution to Early Childhood Education in the community of Avalon over its 60 year history.

As is traditional within the preschool, the families of the children attending rallied together to organise the open day celebrations with a sausage sizzle, face painting, balloon tying and a display of old photographs, stories and memorabilia to showcase the preschool’s history. Local singer and guitarist Miles Wright also provided musical entertainment throughout the day.

“The warm atmosphere and beautiful surrounds made it a fun community day for past students, families and staff to reconnect with each other and for visitors to join in the celebrations,” said Sally.
