KU Ultimo Children's Centre has celebrated the 125th anniversary of KU Children’s Services (KU). The service is run by KU which was founded 125 years ago in 1895 and was the first provider of early childhood education and care in Australia.

The service recognised this special milestone by taking part in a range of sustainability related activities which they have been incorporating into their daily program.

“As part of the celebrations for KU’s 125th anniversary, we decided to collect plastic water bottles and recycle these through the NSW Government’s ‘Return and Earn’ initiative. We also collected 125 water bottles for both planting and storing worm tea and we collected 125 seeds to create plants to send out to families and the local community,” said KU Ultimo Director, Jenny Liu.

The theme of the 125 years celebration was ‘making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education’.

“By engaging in these play-based activities, it has helped to build the children’s early awareness of sustainability and the concept of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’. It has also allowed them to develop stronger connections with the natural environment and our local community,” said Jenny.

“Through these experiences, the children have gained knowledge and skills in areas such as literacy, numeracy, social communication, problem solving, and inquiry and investigating, and our educators have inspired the children’s emerging sustainable values, supporting their life-long learning for a sustainable future.”
