KU Padstow Preschool has celebrated the 125th anniversary of KU Children’s Services (KU). The preschool recognised this special milestone by writing letters to ‘Beauty Point Retirement Resort’, a local retirement village.

“During the recent lockdown, social connections were lost, and we tried to think of a way to keep our families engaged with us and the local community. With visitor restrictions in aged care homes, we thought it would be a great idea to devise our ‘letters of love’. The letters gave the residents something to look forward to and provided a connection with the outside world,” said KU Padstow Director, Nuzhat Cheema.

The theme of the 125 years celebration was ‘making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education’.

“The children were able to make intergenerational connections, which was especially important at a time where they may not have been able to see their own grandparents. It gave the children an opportunity to build connections with the local community and provided the preschool with an opportunity to develop an ongoing relationship with the aged care facility. The children used a variety of mediums for their letters and shared parts of themselves including their ideas, interests and passions. We also received letters from the village, allowing us to get to know some of the residents a bit better,” said Nuzhat.

“125 years is a long time to be providing education and care to children and their families. The celebration is important as it acknowledges the social impact that we have on our community as we continue to build relationships and advocate for children to have the best start in life.”
