The children at KU Peninsula Preschool have started the year by learning about Aboriginal culture.
The children were visited by Uncle Steve from the Murrook Culture Centre who performed a traditional smoking ceremony at the preschool.
“The children helped Uncle Steve collect leaves and plants for the ceremony. They enjoyed watching him perform the ceremony and they were excited to walk through the smoke, which is believed to have cleansing properties,” said KU Peninsula Director, Mark Taylor.
Uncle Steve and other cultural educators will visit KU Peninsula throughout the year as part of their ‘Cultural and Relationship program’, which provides opportunities for children to engage with other cultures, supporting their ongoing learning and development.
“Engaging with other cultures allows children to develop a deeper understanding of the different cultures that exist within our community and allows them to develop a more positive attitude and relationship with others and the world around them,” said Mark.
