KU Blue Mountains Preschool recognises the local Indigenous people

30 June 2009

KU Blue Mountains Preschool has acknowledged the local Dharug people by changing their name to KU Bilya Gulyangarri Preschool.

The beautiful new name means ‘place of laughing children' and is pronounced exactly as it is written.

The name was developed through discussion with local Dharug Elders, in particular Dharug linguist Richard Greene, and is of great meaning to the local Aboriginal community.

Special thanks must also be given to the Preschool Director, Trudi Kirkwood and KU Indigenous Coordinator, Gisella Wilson for their patient and continuing collaboration with the local Dharug community members.

The changing of the name, reflects KU's commitment to respecting and valuing Aboriginal language and culture, and will be celebrated with an official renaming ceremony later in the year.
