About SCAN

Supporting Children with Additional Needs (SCAN) is a program set up by the NSW Government to increase the capacity of eligible preschool, vacation care, and occasional child care services* to include children with additional support needs. KU Children's Services manages the network region known as KU Northern Sydney SCAN.

Funding

As the SCAN organisation, KU is responsible for the management and distribution of funding to support access opportunities for individual children with additional support needs. Additional needs may include:
  • Challenging behaviours
  • Delayed developmental or diagnosed disabilities
  • Severe chronic health conditions
  • Moderate to severe language delays

The funding may be used as:

  • A contribution towards the employment of a support worker (additional to licensing requirements)
  • The purchase of specific equipment/resources or specialised aids relevant to the child's needs
  • Staff training in addition to that provided from the SCAN organisation
  • External professional support for staff

Cultural Education and Consultancy

KU Northern Sydney SCAN also provides cultural education and consultancy to support eligible children's services* to:

  • Increase access and inclusion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and children from a Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background
  • Build relationships and engagement with families in the local community
  • Create environments which are welcoming
  • Form networks and relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other cultural community groups, and
  • Use these relationships to develop a culturally appropriate and diverse curriculum

*Eligible children's services are licensed and/or registered children's services funded under the Children Services Program and are not eligible for Child Care Benefit as an ‘Approved' service. If you are unsure whether your service is eligible, please contact KU Northern Sydney SCAN.
