Choosing Quality Child Care
If you're considering child care for your family, here are some points you should consider to help you choose a centre which will be best for your child:
- Is the centre licensed?
- Do you feel welcome - even if your visit is unannounced?
- Is there a happy atmosphere?
- Do carers spend time talking to and encouraging the children, making lots of eye contact at the children's level, and frequently using their names?
- Is there a planned educational program for your child which takes into account his/her individual developmental level?
- Are cultural differences recognised and accepted?
- Is there a wide range of policies, eg, behaviour management, hygiene procedures, sun sense? Are they written down and available for you to see?
- Is there an orientation process for new children and parents?
- Do toileting, nappy changing and rest times meet individual needs?
- Is there a wide range of toys and activities for the children?
- What are the qualifications and experience of the staff?
- What are the staff:child ratios?
- How well does the centre comply with the local regulations?
- If the service is a long day care centre, is it participating in the National Quality Improvement and Accreditation System?
