Choosing Quality Child Care

If you're considering child care for your family, here are some points you should consider to help you choose a centre which will be best for your child:

  1. Is the centre licensed?
  2. Do you feel welcome - even if your visit is unannounced?
  3. Is there a happy atmosphere?
  4. Do carers spend time talking to and encouraging the children, making lots of eye contact at the children's level, and frequently using their names?
  5. Is there a planned educational program for your child which takes into account his/her individual developmental level?
  6. Are cultural differences recognised and accepted?
  7. Is there a wide range of policies, eg, behaviour management, hygiene procedures, sun sense? Are they written down and available for you to see?
  8. Is there an orientation process for new children and parents?
  9. Do toileting, nappy changing and rest times meet individual needs?
  10. Is there a wide range of toys and activities for the children?
  11. What are the qualifications and experience of the staff?
  12. What are the staff:child ratios?
  13. How well does the centre comply with the local regulations?
  14. If the service is a long day care centre, is it participating in the National Quality Improvement and Accreditation System?
